WHY IS PORCELAIN A HIGHLY POPULAR COUNTERTOP MATERIAL IN TORONTO?

Porcelain is made from heating a mixture of powdered china stone and white china clay, also known as kaolin, at about 1450°C. The high temperature causes the china stone to vitrify into a dense, highly durable material, while the object retains its shape thanks to the kaolin. Impurities such as silica, mineral oxides and feldspars exist in the clay, but rather than detracting from the porcelain’s quality, they add to its strength and colour. When porcelain slabs are manufactured for countertops, they’re coated with a pigmented glaze. This gives them an aesthetic appeal similar to that of natural stone, or even marble. Porcelain’s tough structure also makes it scratch-resistant. You can even slice and dice food right on it without worrying about your knives damaging the surface. It is also virtually impervious to water. According to the Tile Council of North America, its absorption rate is less than 0.5%. So, don’t stress too much about spills staining your porcelain countertop.

At MaxSpace Stone Works Inc., our porcelain countertops feature added fiberglass reinforcement on the back. This added feature, along with the dense, non-porous porcelain material, ensures that your countertop will last for years, without any cracks or stains.

HOW TO MAINTAIN PORCELAIN COUNTERTOPS

Since porcelain is non-porous, nothing can penetrate its surface or stain it so long as you clean it properly. Neutral detergents, bleaches and acid detergents (perfect for removing cement residue) are ideal for everyday cleaning. Avoid cleaning products that contain hydrofluoric acid or its derivatives (these can damage porcelain surfaces) as well as harsh cleaning tools such as steel wool pads. For those stubborn marks that are not easily removed, you can use a bit more of an abrasive sponge, but be careful not to use one that's too rough.

CHOOSE FROM A RANGE OF COLOURS AND TEXTURES

Need a high gloss finish to match your traditional kitchen? Want a matte countertop for your natural wood kitchen island? Whatever your porcelain countertop finish preferences, we've got you covered. During manufacturing, different pigmented glazes are added to create varying patterns and colours on the slabs. Being an engineered material, they can be produced in virtually any colour or pattern, and can even be made to mimic the look of natural stone. Varied pigmentation of the raw materials creates a wide range of colours and hues. This means you’ll find several that will work well with your existing decor, or the theme you’re developing for a new or remodeled kitchen. Discoloration or colour change is not a concern as it is with some other materials.

HOW MUCH DO PORCELAIN COUNTERTOPS IN TORONTO COST?

Porcelain is a popular countertop material among homeowners because it’s attractive and durable. Its price will vary widely depending on a number of factors, including the colour, overall size, tile chosen, type of edging, and whether you need backsplashes, corners and cutouts. On average, purchase and installation costs should range between $60 and 100 per sq. ft depending on its design, thickness and finish.

If you choose a material manufactured overseas, import costs may affect pricing. The size and design of the countertop – whether you choose a rectangular one, something that wraps around a corner, or one that has cutouts for stove tops or sinks, for instance – will also affect costing. So, consider these factors to make sure you stay on budget.

USES OF PORCELAIN COUNTERTOPS IN HOMES

PORCELAIN KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS

Porcelain is a versatile, durable and low-maintenance material that is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners due to its many benefits. Being a cost-effective option, it’s become popular for use in kitchen countertops. With the sheer variety of colours and patterns available, it’s a preferred choice among homeowners looking for something to match or contrast with their kitchen decor. It’s much stronger than other natural stone alternatives and can resist cracks, chips, scratches and other instances of daily wear and tear. Its durability and versatility make it suitable for applications other than countertops. These other uses include shower walls, fireplace surrounds, tub areas, along with floor and wall cladding. It’s a functional and durable addition to your home that will increase your property’s value.

PORCELAIN BATHROOM COUNTERTOPS

As with the kitchen, porcelain also fits in with both traditional and modern bathrooms. Its density and hardiness make it ideal for bathrooms, where wear and tear is common. As it is stain-resistant, you don’t need to be concerned about spills from lotions, makeup or other types of liquids used on the countertop surface. It’s also scratch-resistant so you won’t have to worry about accidentally damaging your countertop by dropping something on it.
