Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone. It has the aesthetic appearance of marble, but is comparatively harder and denser. Quartzite countertops are popular because of their versatility in any design based on both their colour choices and cut possibilities. Quartzite is very durable against scratches, except when it comes to prolonged heat. You also have to be careful to distinguish between “hard” quartzite (which is the pure and durable type) and “soft” quartzite (which is the softer, marble-like type).
